THERE IS A CRACK IN EVERYTHING, AND THAT’S HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN
2021–2022

(Leonard Cohen – “Anthem”)

A self-portrait project enriched by digital textures and physical interventions on the photographic surface, through tearing and layering different types of paper. The images become dark-toned paintings in which the figure remains wrapped in silence, touched by light.

Yet, disrupting the apparent normality of things, a crack enters the everyday space of the room, raising a question, a doubt. This crack represents everything we cannot control in our lives: from personal and intimate experiences—a loss, a separation—to social events such as war or a pandemic, which can call into question and threaten everything we are.

Layers accumulate, shaped by the passing of days and by lived experience. At times, words and letters emerge—words that can hurt or soothe wounds, build or destroy.

The phrase that gives the project its title is taken from the lyrics of a song by Leonard Cohen. It refers to the imperfection inherent in all human things, but also suggests that imperfection is not a reason to abandon our commitment to constructive action in the world.

Shadows, silences, and existential fractures settle upon the images, evoking the philosophy of Kintsugi: the fractures in our lives can become precious traces of what we have experienced, marks that do not prevent us from moving forward and continuing to reflect the light.

The project was awarded First Prize at the Portfolio Review of Veneto Fotografia 2022 and received a nomination at the Fine Art Photography Awards 2023.
